Our Beauty Editor Answers All Your Burning Prom Makeup Questions

Photo: Jason Lloyd-Evans
Last week, many of our awesome and loyal Tumblr followers asked their most burning prom makeup questions. Here, I've rounded up the top 10 and have done my very best to answer! We'll be asking all sorts of beauty Qs every Thursday afternoon, so make sure you're following along to see what's happening. Below, check out the Teen Vogue-approved guide to easy smoky eyes, natural makeup essentials, and the key to pulling off glitter. Enjoy!
1. How do you do an easy smoky eye? —mavericksophiasutter
Hands down, the easiest way to accomplish a smoky eye is with a cream shadow and your good ol' fingertips. If you want to be especially fancy, Surratt Beauty makes an "Eye Baton" that I like to call "Smoky Eye for Dummies." One end is a cream liner, the other is a puffy sponge that deposits metallic pigment onto the lid and helps you blend. Laura Mercier also has lovely Caviar Sticks that give a nice sheen to the lid—tap the color with your ring finger repeatedly and blend it towards the crease as you see fit. Finally, a good creamy kohl pencil is necessary, and there's nothing better than M.A.C. Feline! Go halfway across the bottom lash line to open the eye (or all the way if you want drama) and line the top lash line, then blend with a stiff eyeshadow brush. Add on Bobbi Brown's Smoky Eye Mascara and you're done!
2. How do you keep your makeup from smearing and spreading? —itspoorthi
We actually just wrote an awesome piece on how to make your makeup last all throughout prom! The key is really in the formulas. Look for "long wear" on the bottle, and opt for matte finishes.
3. What's something that differs from your normal everyday eye makeup, but isn't over the top? —teatime4menow
I think Sarah Hyland at the Golden Globes is what you should be looking for. Try diffusing a dot of concealer on the tops of your eyelids to brighten, then grab a fluffy brush and dip it into a gold eyeshadow, like Chanel's foolproof Illusion d'Ombres. Then, highlight the inner corners with a pearl color, and drag that out across the bottom lash line for extra radiance. To finish, follow these instructions for a flawless mascara application.
4. Do I need to wear makeup to prom if I usually don't wear any at all? —iateallofthecake
You don't have to do anything you don't want to do. Makeup should always be fun and enjoyable! If you don't like it, tonight is probably not the best night to start experimenting with colored shadow or lipstick. Trust me, these photos will follow you around forever. You just want to look like yourself.
5. How can I keep my eye makeup vibrant all night? —zeinmelek
Vibrant eye makeup is accomplished by layering. Start with an eyeshadow primer (Urban Decay's, because, duh!) and then quickly build your base color by diffusing shadow all over the lid. Then, once you've finished contouring the crease and dragging the color under the outer corner of the eye (if that's what you're doing), you need to mix up your texture! This is the time for more audacious glitters and shimmers, but don't pick something too creamy or you'll risk it falling down your face. I'm obsessed with Stila's Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eyeshadows. I would actually grab a concealer brush and pat it into the pan, then repeat that motion on the center of my eyelid. You can then spread the glitter carefully by stippling with a duo fibre eye brush if you're worried about it budging.
6. How do you do the perfect glittery eye makeup and what's the best gold eyeliner? —teenagedarling
You know, it's funny, two of my very favorite looks at Fashion Week involved glitter. Both were executed by the same man: Tom Pecheux. (If you don't know him, he's a pretty incredible makeup artist!) At Altuzarra, he claimed to "twist glitter's arm" (AKA make it more chic, less showgirl) by opting for no mascara or lip color. If you want to do an all-out glittery eye, I'd say this is a good starting point. You can add a lip tint (I love Bite's Lip Tint for a natural glow) and a bit of brown mascara, then keep the rest of the face bare. You'll need something to make it stick, of course, so consider blending your pigment in with M.A.C. Mixing Medium Shine before applying. As for the best gold liner? Try Urban Decay Heavy Metal in Midnight Cowboy.
7. Is there such a thing as natural makeup for prom? —abloggernamed
Totally! In fact, natural makeup can be very pretty. I think a solid, photo-ready routine will consist of YSL Top Secrets BB Cream, an easy-to-blend concealer like NARS Radiant Creamy, a couple quick coats of mascara, and a hint of color on the lips. (Kind of like Anna Kendrick at the Oscars, you know?)
8. How do you shade your eyebrows to make them look more bold? —beautiful-lies-win
One of my favorite makeup artists, Jeanine Lobell, schooled our beauty and health director Elaine Welteroth on how to score perfect arches! Check out the video here.
9. Should I do heavy eyes or heavy lips? —lifeishappeninggg
It's entirely up to you! Choose whichever feature you prefer to highlight. The fun thing about eye makeup for a beauty junkie is it's very transformative; you can play with all sorts of textures and shades to really create a full look. But I have to say, what feels freshest right now, especially for a fun event like prom, is just a bold lip with some mascara. If it's bright, go for a matte texture (you'd be remiss not to try some of Hourglass' Opaque Rouge liquid lipsticks at Sephora!). If it's dark, make sure to highlight your Cupid's Bow (so your upper lip doesn't get lost). Try NARS Trainblue for matte, or Jennifer Lawrence wore Rouge Dior Prune Daisy to the Golden Globes if you prefer a satin finish.
10. How do I perfect the frosty eye look? —freakilyfunny
Let's get one thing very clear: Frosty eye makeup can easily go wrong. You need to take this out of Snow Princess territory and into a modern, fashion-forward place. The best, real-life iteration of pastel makeup I can think of was Diane Kendal's eye look backstage at Chloé Fall 2014. Using M.A.C.'s Beautiful Iris eyeshadow, she diffused the color across the lid, keeping it concentrated below the crease. There's no color beneath the eyes, and there's also minimal makeup elsewhere. Ditch the blush and grab a powder luminizer instead. Skip contouring altogether, and do a subtle lip with Clinique's Chubby Stick. Also, consider just one coat of your most natural mascara to keep it pretty and not garish! Black lashes contrast very intensely against light colors, and you want to keep your look romantic.
