So many factors go into scoring the perfect prom dress that it's no wonder the process can become a little frustrating. Maybe you're having a hard time finding the right fit for your body or you just haven't seen "the one" you've envisioned in your head. Or worse, you're worried you're going to show up at prom in the same dress as another girl. We hear you. So, wouldn't it be amazing if you could create your own unique design, kind of like your favorite red carpet-strutting celebs?
Well, now two cool fashion-meets-tech companies, PIOL and Fame & Partners, have created a way for you to design your own personalized, made-to-order prom dress. And the customization process is half the fun—especially with each site's initial Buzzfeed-esque questionnaire that uses an algorithm on the backend to hone down the perfect dress (or dresses) for you. Read on for all the scoop on both sites.
Fashion history aficionados will appreciate PIOL, which was inspired by the principles of legendary Hollywood costume designer Edith Head. The approach is based on the idea that the right colors and made-to-measure tailoring will highlight and flatter any girl's body. (They have a whopping 44 color palettes, with 75 fabrics per palette.) The site offers five classic silhouettes to choose from and customize with your preferred colors, prints, details, and exact measurements—like an IRL tailor would do. Think Kate Middleton goes to prom. PIOL only uses top-notch fabrics from Italy and Japan and the garments are hand-sewn in New York. Orders take three to four weeks for delivery and prices range from $525 to $645 for a stretch silk frock. It's not cheap, but everything comes with the guarantee of a full refund if you're not satisfied with the results.
Fame & Partners launched just in time for this year's prom season and starts with a slightly longer, but ridiculously fun questionnaire. Sample questions have you choosing your favorite street style pics (Miroslava Duma or Olivia Palermo? Can't decide? Pick as many as you want!), runway looks, red carpet celebrity gowns, runway show beauty looks, and more. Then, you're presented with a series of cool, party-ready dresses selected just for you, plus some back-ups, just in case. The final result also shows a moodboard full of design inspirations (apparently, Vanessa Hudgens in black and gold Temperley was the muse for mine) and a video of a model wearing the dream dress. Prices range from $69 to $399 and delivery takes seven to 10 days. The best part? The "Twin Alert" option lets you know if someone is already planning on wearing the same dress, with the same customizations to—horror!—the same event. Because it's always better to leave the fashion faceoff moments to us.
So, what do you think? Would you consider designing your own dress for prom?
